Managing Mental Health in the Holidays

It is perfectly normal to feel blue at Christmas time.

There are a variety of reasons why your days may not be merry and bright around the holiday season. It can be the jam-packed social calendar, deadlines at work, the loss of a loved one, sunless winter days, or all of the above.

 1. Prioritize Self-Care: Make sure to take time for yourself during the holidays. This could include taking a walk, reading a book, or engaging in a hobby.

2. Set Boundaries: It can be easy to get overwhelmed during the holidays. Set boundaries with family and friends to ensure that you are not overcommitting yourself.

3. Practice Mindfulness: Take time to be mindful and present in the moment. This can help to reduce stress and anxiety.

4. Reach Out for Support: If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to a friend or family member for support.

5. Seek Professional Help: If you are struggling with your mental health, seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide support and resources to help you manage your mental health

Why are you feeling this way?

You are feeling pressured to partake in activities.

It is important to remember that you are in control of your own life and you don't have to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are feeling pressured to partake in activities that you don't want to do, it is okay to say no. It is also important to set boundaries with family and friends to ensure that you are not overcommitting yourself. Additionally, practice mindfulness and reach out for support if you need it.

You’re Alone or Feeling Isolated.

While it’s true that many of us have friends and family to connect with during the holiday season, there’s also the danger of becoming isolated. If you are predisposed to depression or anxiety, it can be especially hard to reach out to others.

You’re Stressed About Giving Gifts.

The holidays can be a stressful time of year, especially when it comes to gift-giving. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to give the perfect gift, try to focus on the meaning behind the gift rather than the cost. Remember that it’s the thought that counts.

You’re Struggling With Grief.

The holidays can be an especially difficult time for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. It’s important to be gentle with yourself and to take time to honor the memory of your loved one. Reach out for support if you need it.

Lacking the holiday spirit.

If you’re feeling a lack of holiday spirit, it’s important to remember that it’s okay to feel this way. Take time to do activities that bring you joy, such as reading a book, going for a walk, or engaging in a hobby. Do you feel like everyone else is happy and merry at this time of the year? Remember that everything is not as it seems, and Christmas is stressful for everyone regardless of how happy them seem.
